Why do we need them?
Also called 'portable skills', transferable skills are that you can transfer from one job to another. Does not matter wherever you go, these skills that you have developed over the course of your career goes with you. Skills like leadership, adaptability, collaboration are some of the transferable skills. We will be talking about Computer Literacy, Leadership and Problem solving skills.
Leadership
Being someone who can coach, empower and support those around you is a great skill in the workplace. It helps you get the best out of the team you are working in. The website, mindtools.com, says that "leaders help themselves and others to do the right things". What this means is that leaders set direction, build an inspiring vision, and aspire to create something new. Leadership is about mapping out where you need to go to "win" as a team or an organization; and it is dynamic, exciting, and inspiring.
Computer Literacy
You have used a computer for 10s of years, does not mean you are truly computer literate. You need to have a certain set of know how on how to be a computer literate, some of which are: knowing how to do basic set of installations and setting user permissions, knowing how to look yourself up through your IP address, knowing how to set up and print documents, browser basics, common hardware knowledge, how to hook a computer up, etc. Knowing these set of specific skills will make you a computer literate, and will be able to navigate through common problems and troubleshoot your way through errors and issues.
Problem Solving Skills
Problem-solving skills help us find the root of any issues occurred and get possible solutions to deal with those problems. Although problem-solving is often identified as its own separate skill, there are other related skills that contribute to this ability. Subheadings under this wider terminology can be: decision making, creativity, active listening, communication, dependability and mainly, communication. Problem-solving skills are important in every career at every level. As a result, effective problem solving may also require industry or job-specific technical skills. Communication is an essential problem solving skill, as while trying to figure out solutions, you will need to know how to effectively communicate the problem to others. You will also need to know what communication channels are the most appropriate when asking for help. Once you find a solution, communicating it clearly will help reduce any confusion and make implementing it easier.
